TODAY IN MUSIC: “Never Gonna Give You Up” by British singer/songwriter Rick Astley began a two-week run at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on March 12, 1988. Written and produced by powerhouse production team Stock Aitken Waterman (Kylie Minogue, Dead or Alive, Bananarama), the song was the lead single from Rick Astley’s debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody (1987). The song was a worldwide hit, initially in Astley’s native UK, where it stayed #1 for five weeks and was the best-selling single of the year. It would eventually top the charts in 25 countries. The video for the song became the basis for the “Rickrolling” Internet meme. In 2008, Astley wont the MTV Europe Music Award for “Best Act Ever” for “Never Gonna Give You Up”, as a result of internet voting. “Never Gonna Give You Up” is considered Astley’s signature song. On October 2009, the music video, directed by Simon West, was uploaded to YouTube. It has garnered more than 536 million views as of March 2019. #nevergonnagiveyouup #rickastley #rickrolled #britishsingers #billboardhot100 #billboardmagazine #billboardmag #stockaitkenwaterman #wheneveryouneedsomebody #blueyedsoul #ginger #charttopper #mtv #mtvvideomusicawards #mtveurope #bestactever #signaturesong #simonwest #youtube #tonyatlarge #eclectimaniacradioshow #todayinmusic #musichistory
