TODAY IN MUSIC: On March 14, 1987, Boy George hit the top of the UK Singles chart for the first and only time as a solo artist with his cover of “Everything I Own”. The song remained at #1 for two weeks. Written by David Gates, it was originally recorded by Gate’s band Bread for their album, Baby I’m-a Want You” (1972). “Everything I Own” was also Boy George’s first solo single after splitting from his band, Culture Club. Coming at the time of his arrest for heroin possession, the song’s success provided a major boost to his career. Other than the UK, the single was a number one in many countries including Canada, Ireland, Italy, Norway and South Africa. The track was recorded during the Sold album sessions at Air Studios Montserrat and produced by Stewart Levine. The original version recorded by Bread reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another cover of the song by Jamaican artist Ken Boothe also reached #1 in the UK in October 1974. “Everything I Own” has also been recorded by Shirley Bassey, *NSYNC, Chrissie Hynde and Olivia Newton-John. #boygeorge #everythingiown #sold #uk #davidgates #bread #breadband #babyimawantyou #cultureclub #airstudiosmontserrat #stewartlevine #billboardmag #billboard #kenboothe #shirleybassey #nsync #chrissiehynde #olivianewtonjohn #tonyatlarge #eclectimaniacradioshow #todayinmusic #musichistory
