TODAY IN MUSIC: Rapture, the second studio album by Anita Baker, was released on March 21, 1986. Rapture was Baker’s breakout album, selling over 8 million copies and earning two Grammy Awards (Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for Rapture and Best Rhythm & Blues Song for “Sweet Love”.) The album was embraced by both black radio and Top 40 formats, launching Baker into a new level of stardom during the late 1980s. Anita Baker started her career in the late 1970s in the band Chapter 8. In 1983, she released her debut solo album, The Songstress. As of 2017, Baker has won eight Grammy Awards out of eighteen total nominations. She also has the second most all-time wins in the now defunct Grammy category of Best Female R&B Vocal Performance with five.
