
TODAY IN MUSIC: On March 26, 1977, “Rich Girl” by Daryl Hall & John Oates became their first of six number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. From their fifth studio album, Bigger Than Both of Us, the single was one of the biggest hits of the year. “Rich Girl” was written about an ex-boyfriend of Hall’s longtime girlfriend, Sara Allen. The original lyrics he penned for the chorus using rich guy “didn’t sound right”, so he changed it to “Rich Girl”. Hall and Oates’ other number one hits are: “Kiss on My List”, “Private Eyes”, “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)”, “Maneater” and “Out of Touch”. They are the most successful music duo in history. In total, Hall and Oates had 34 chart hits on the Hot 100 and sold an estimated 40 million records. In 2003, the duo were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2014.
