TODAY IN MUSIC: On April 1, 1995, “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan began a seven week run at number one on the US R&B singles chart. Released as the lead single and title track of Jordan’s debut studio album on Def Jam Recordings, the song features a sample of “Children’s Story” by Slick Rick. “This Is How We Do It” was an immense crossover success as well, becoming Jordan’s first and only Billboard Hot 100 number one, also spending seven weeks at the top of that chart. The song has appeared on a number of movie soundtracks and was nominated for the Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance Grammy Award. Montell Jordan went on to become a born again christian and left the music industry in 2010 to become a worship leader at Victory World Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
