TODAY IN MUSIC: Toto IV, the fourth studio album by Toto, was released on April 8, 1982. After the success of their self-titled debut album, the band’s sales and popularity quickly subsided over the course of their next two albums. Feeling intense pressure from Columbia Records to deliver a hit, the group decided to go back to basics and play up their strengths. Toto IV took their career to new heights, sending four songs into the US Top 40: “Rosanna” (#2), “Africa” (their first, and only, #1), “I Won’t Hold You Back” (#10) and “Make Believe” (#30). The album sold more than 12 million copies and went on to win six Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, Producer of the Year and Record of the Year for “Rosanna”. “Africa” has become a enduring classic, utilized in internet memes and television shows. In 2018, after the fan-initiated Twitter campaign “@WeezerAfrica”, the band Weezer recorded a cover of “Africa” that became their first Hot 100 hit since 2009. Toto IV was the last album released by the band’s original lineup. #totoiv #toto #columbiarecords #rosanna #africa #totoafrica #iwontholdyouback #makebelieve #grammyawards #albumoftheyear #produceroftheyear #recordoftheyear #twittercampaigns @weezerafrica #weezerafrica #weezer #tonyatlarge #eclectimaniacradioshow #todayinmusic #musichistory
