TODAY IN MUSIC: On April 16, 2018, DAMN the 2017 album by Kendrick Lamar, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Mr. Lamar is not only the first rapper to win the award since the Pulitzer Prize was expanded to include music in 1943, but he is the first winner who is not a jazz or classical musician. Upon release, DAMN was met with universal acclaim. In its announcement, The Pulitzer Board called DAMN “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offer affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.” DAMN topped the album charts in both America and Canada, won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and was Billboard Magazine’s Year-End #1 Album for 2017. Kendrick Lamar’s other major label releases include Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City (2012) and To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), the latter also a Best Rap Album Grammy winner. In what was widely considered a major upset, DAMN lost the Album of the Year Grammy to 24K Magic by Bruno Mars at the ceremony held January 28, 2018. #damn #kendricklamar #pulitzerprizeformusic #bestrapalbum #goodkidmaadcity #topimpabutterfly #24kmagic #brunomars #tonyatlarge #eclectimaniacradioshow #todayinmusic #musichistory
