Today in Music: 4/22/19

TODAY IN MUSIC: Around the World in a Day by Prince & the Revolution was released on April 22, 1985, on Paisley Park Records. Around the World in Day was the highly anticipated follow-up to the immensely popular Purple Rain. The album was Prince’s seventh studio album overall and his third with the Revolution. Around the World in a Day was a marked departure from the more commercial Minneapolis sound Prince had crafted up to that point. The psychedelic vibe of the album was inspried by a demo recorded by David Coleman, the brother of Revolution keyboardist Lisa Coleman. Around the World in a Day was released to mixed critical reception but was still successful becoming Prince & the Revolution’s second number one album. Further, two of the four singles released from the record reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100: “Raspberry Beret” (#2) and “Pop Life” (#7). In a retrospective review, Pitchfork described the album as “a brave and deeply personal project, exploring sounds and ideas that were almost shocking coming from a pop icon at his peak.” #aroundtheworldinaday #princeandtherevolution #prince #davidcoleman #lisacoleman #paisleypark #paisleyparkrecords #purplerain #minneapolissound #psychedelic #raspberryberet #poplife #pitchfork #tonyatlarge #eclectimaniacradioshow #todayinmusic #musichistory
