Today in Music: 5/20/19

TODAY IN MUSIC: “Groovin” by the Young Rascals reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 20, 1967. Written by group members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, the song reflected Cavaliere’s new interest in Afro-Cuban music. The group’s label, Atlantic Records, had reservations about the song and did not want to release it. Influential New York disc jockey Murray the K recognized the song as a hit and persuaded Atlantic to reconsider their decision. “Groovin” spent a total of four (non-consecutive) weeks at the top of the chart (the song’s reign at number one was interrupted for two weeks by Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”). “Groovin” is one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. #groovin #theyoungrascals #billboardhot100 #billboardnumberones #felixcavaliere #eddiebrigati #afrocuban #atlanticrecords #murraythk #arethafranklin #respect #rockandrollhalloffame #500songsthatshapedrockandroll #tonyatlarge #eclectimaniacradioshow #todayinmusic #musichistory
