Today in Music: 5/27/19

TODAY IN MUSIC: On May 27, 1976, Aretha Franklin released Music from the Warner Bros. Picture “Sparkle”. Written and produced by Curtis Mayfield, the album is the soundtrack to the 1976 film Sparkle starring Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, Dwan Smith and Philip Michael Thomas, with Franklin’s vocals substituting for the vocalists from the film. The record was a success for Franklin, returning her to gold status after two low performing albums. Sparkle’s lead single, “Something He Can Feel”, was a number one hit on the R&B chart and reached the top twenty on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1992, En Vogue recorded a hugely successful cover of the song for their multi-platinum album Funky Divas. #sparkle #arethafranklin #warnerbros #curtismayfield #irenecara #lonettemckee #dwansmith #philipmichaelthomas #somethinghecanfeel #hot100 #randb #soulsingles #envogue #funkydivas #billboardmag #coversongs #cultfilms #tonyatlarge #eclectimaniacradioshow #todayinmusic #musichistory
