Studio 54 Documentary

imagesMe and my good friends and co-hosts from the ECLECTIMANIAC Radio Show, Seth Davis and Jeff McKinney, recently checked out the new Studio 54 documentary at the 19th Annual FilmColumbia Festival. It’s not so much that you learn anything new (the 54 legend is well-documented), but there is something special in hearing the story told by Ian Schrager. Speaking candidly about that chapter in his life as never before, he is the only person (other than his best friend and business partner, the late Steve Rubell), who can truly tell this tale. There’s a real sense of being taken “behind the rope” here and getting a fresh perspective of this famous story…from the person who lived it. Directed by Matt Tyrnauer, the film was introduced by FilmColumbia’s own Managing Director Calliope Nichols, who worked at Studio 54 as a coat check girl during its heyday. After the screening, she held a Q&A with the audience filled with anecdotes that only a coat check girl at Studio 54 would have. Variety called it a “thrilling and definitive documentary”. I completely agree.  Watch the trailer here.
